The Law of Consular Relations

Abstract The Vienna Convention on Consular Relations was adopted in 1963. Based on the consensus of states, being subject to an agreement between the sending and the receiving state, the consular relations are dealing with the appointment of consular posts, the duties of consuls in the consular district, facilities and obligations, privileges and immunities, and the termination of consular functions. Emphasis is given to the obligations of the state of residence to provide facilities for the consular posts. A number of cases concerning this Convention were dealt before the International Court of Justice, the Hague.
