« The Peach-Blossom Fountain » by Tao Yuanming. An Interpretation
The analysis of the "Story of the Peach-Blossom Fountain", a short piece of prose fiction by the famous Chinese writer Tao Yuanming (365-427), reveals the presence of shamanist and taoist influences. These are none the less distinct for showing soberly and turn a text seemingly meant for mere diversion into an actual allegory. The typical clever harmony pervading it conceals its syncretic character made up of two elements historically related and by no means contradictory although they cannot be reduced to each other.
