Burials with ditches in the Early Avar period

View through CrossRef
Abstract In this article, we present the ditch-framed graves of Babarc-Mérnökségi telep (Grave SNR 28) and Hajdúböszörmény-Bak-hát-dűlő sites. Together with these, a total of seven such graves from the Early Avar period are known. Although they indicate a connection with the Eastern European steppe communities of the 5th–7th centuries based on their other burial practices, their exact analogies are unknown outside the Avar Kaghanate. The grave goods suggest that these ditch-framed burials probably date from the first half of the Early Avar period.
