Nail diseases present as alteration of the nail plate, alteration of the periungual tissues, or as a combination of the two. Most commonly, external agents, such as fungus or trauma, affect the nail alone, whereas all inflammatory and neoplastic processes affect the surrounding tissues as a primary process giving rise to secondary nail plate alteration.
