An “Anonymous” Interview with Morrison Foster and George C. Cooper (ca. 1888)

View through CrossRef
Abstract The two unnamed interviewees in this article can be identified as the brother of composer Stephen C. Foster and the songwriter’s friend from New York: Morrison Foster and George C. Cooper, respectively. The article includes information about the composer’s life in New York and songwriting habits. The author portrays him as living in a state of “destitution,” having a “disreputable and unkempt” appearance, and being an alcoholic. Cooper also recalls the events of the composer’s tragic death. The interviewees also describe Foster’s physical appearance and detail his earnings from songwriting. Christopher Lynch provides an introduction and annotations with notes and corrections.
