Introduction

The introduction opens by reviewing the fragmented state of the field of source criticism as it was presented in 2013, at a conference titled “Convergence and Divergence in Pentateuchal Theory: Bridging the Academic Cultures of Israel, North America, and Europe.” The premise of the book is that modern scholars who are doing diachronic work do so under anachronistic notions of literary unity. Examples are adduced from both the Baal Cycle and the Sefire Treaty which exhibit precisely the types of inconsistencies that scholars take as evidence of multiple authorship in the Pentateuch, even though each of these cognate compositions is assumed to be the work of a single hand. The Introduction then briefly describes the contents of each of the fourteen chapters of the book.
