Abstract
This paper is a review‐type article dealing with infrared (IR) spectrometers and their applications. The paper represents general aspects of IR spectrometry and general principles of IR spectrometers. Performance properties of IR spectrometers and especially detectors are defined and described. More detailed descriptions are given for prism, grating, Fourier transform (FT), and laser spectrometers. Because nowadays most of the IR spectra are recorded by FT‐IR spectrometers, the main attention of the paper is aimed at FT‐IR instruments. The advantages of FT spectrometers as compared with grating spectrometers are also demonstrated. The paper gives a large number of typical examples of applications of FT‐IR spectrometers in science and practical analysis.
