Bros before Chos

This chapter explores Rowling’s portrayal of male homosocial dynamics in the larger context of heteronormativity in the series. While less abrasive than they might be, the masculinities celebrated in Harry Potter remain steeped in a hierarchical structure that lionizes a select few. Male characters coded as superior are shown to greatly benefit from the support of other males, but only to the extent that they can accept the duties and responsibilities of their unequal places. The inferiorly-regarded male must manage his insecurities and resentments, while the superiorly-regarded male cultivates a façade of humility. This model also maintains Harry Potter’s “nicer” patriarchy, which categorizes females as sexual objects that threaten patriarchal power by attempting to supplant male homosocial bonds. Heterosexual relationships are the only ones possible, yet they are presented as potentially disruptive to the ‘important work’ of men.
