Role of Prophetic Teachings in Character Building of University Students: A Qualitative Study

View through CrossRef
This qualitative study explored the role of Prophetic teachings in the character building of university students, with a particular focus on the moral and ethical framework derived from the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Grounded in the concept of Uswa Hasana (the excellent model), the study examined how Prophetic principles, teaching methods, and teacher role-modeling contribute to students’ moral, social, and spiritual development. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 30 teachers and focus group discussions involving 10 teachers who actively integrate Prophetic teachings into character education. A thematic analysis approach was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that core Prophetic values honesty, patience, compassion, justice, humility, forgiveness, and empathy play a significant role in shaping students’ ethical behavior and social responsibility. Teachers reported that the Uswa Hasana of the Prophet provides a powerful moral framework that helps students internalize virtues through imitation and reflection. Prophetic teaching methods such as storytelling, dialogue, and experiential learning were found to be highly effective in promoting moral awareness, critical thinking, and real-life application of ethical principles. Furthermore, teachers’ roles as moral role models were identified as a central factor in reinforcing character development, as students closely observe and emulate their teachers’ behavior. The study also identified practical strategies for integrating Prophetic teachings into modern educational settings, including curriculum integration, mentorship programs, reflective discussions, role-playing, and community service activities. Overall, the findings suggest that Prophetic teachings offer a comprehensive and practical approach to character education, enabling universities to foster morally responsible, socially conscious, and spiritually grounded students.
