The People's Patriarch

View through CrossRef
Abstract This book charts the extraordinary life of Patriarch Tikhon (Bellavin), who became head of the Russian Orthodox Church at the same moment as the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Drawing from his long experience in North America both in navigating a secular state and mobilizing popular support from below, Tikhon defended the Orthodox Church against the assaults of the new militant atheist state that was determined to eradicate religion. He was under immense pressure from the government, but he navigated the challenges in part thanks to both his widespread domestic popularity and his standing as an international religious leader. Patriarch Tikhon therefore paved the way for Orthodox Christianity’s survival in the Soviet Union. This is the first comprehensive biography in English and is based upon a wealth of previously untapped or unavailable primary sources.
