A Russian Fleet at Anchor near Elsinore
View through National Gallery of Denmark
The painting is the first marine that Eckersberg did after having painted numerous studies of clouds in early September 1826 [cat. 63–64]. Immediately afterwards, on 10 September, he went to Elsinore by steamboat – a journey that took him past a Russian squadron comprising three ships of the line and six frigates. He went on to draw the ships from an inland position (cf. Eckersberg, 2009, 214). Immediately upon his return to Copenhagen he began painting this work, on which he worked from 12-21 October that year (Eckersberg, 2009, 217f.). The treatment of the clouds clearly demonstrates that his careful observations had greatly honed the precision of his cloud formations. Perhaps the clouds seen in this painting were based on a now unknown cloud study from early September that year.
