Franke ist Physiker und Höhlenforscher, einer der Begründer der Computerkunst und Math Art, ein führender Vertreter der deutschsprachigen Science Fiction-Literatur. Darüber hinaus hat er eine rationale Kunsttheorie entwickelt. Im Grenzbereich zwischen Wissenschaft und Kunst gibt es nur wenige, die so breit aufgestellt sind wie er.
