Between Touch and Thought

This chapter explores the paradoxical concept of realizing the schema in freestanding songs. It references the trope in a canso by the troubadour Aimeric de Peguilhan to tackle the dynamic of singing that triggers epiphanies. Epiphany in antique literary and visual art typically relies on the senses and imagination. The changes in emphasis between classical or late antique epiphany and its medieval avatars imply the modifications in the dynamic of the sequence placing song between touch and thought. The chapter examines the epiphanies within the Remede de Fortune by Machaut, the heir to the troubadours and trouvères, Boethius, and the authors of late antiquity.
