De tous les artistes français du Siècle de Lumières, Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) est celui qui a, de loin, exécuté le plus grand nombre de représentations d’une personne en train de lire. Peintre surtout de lecteurs de livres, plus que de lettres, Fragonard ne peint pourtant jamais de manière réaliste la page lue : un examen attentif de ses tableaux révèle une utilisation originale de la couleur jaune qui insiste non seulement sur une surprenante unité corporelle entre lecteur et livre, mais également sur une parole fluide, conçue comme un mouvement fédérateur et dynamique.
