A comparison of the management postulates of Frederick Taylor and Chester Barnard through the prism of modern management problems
View through CrossRef
The relevance of the presented research is determined by the need to accelerate the implementation of processes of structural restructuring of the economy, in which the art of management at all levels will play a huge role - from individual enterprises and organizations to the national economy as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine the management postulates of Frederick Taylor and Chester Barnard from a theoretical and methodological perspective through the lens of contemporary management issues in order to use them to intensify the processes of structural restructuring of the national economy. The scientific novelty of the obtained results lies in the comparative analysis of the basic principles of scientific management of F.W. Taylor (including: development of a methodology for each element of work; scientific selection, training, guidance, and development of employees; close collaboration with employees; division of labor and responsibility between management and employees, etc.) and the postulates of organizational management of C.I. Barnard (including: a description of formal organizations as cooperative systems; a consideration of the theory and structure of formal organizations; an analysis of the elements of formal organizations; a study of the function of organization in cooperative systems; a study of the relationship between science and art in management, etc.). The research demonstrated that the mechanistic approach to management espoused by F.W. Taylor and the socio-psychological approach to management by C.I. Barnard can rationally complement each other, providing a more comprehensive, integrated approach to solving modern management problems. The practical significance of the obtained results lies in their potential use in the development and implementation of economic restructuring programs through the prism of F.W. Taylor’s principles of scientific management and the postulates of C. Barnard’s teachings on the implementation of executive functions in organizations, adapted to modern conditions.
