Der Orbis Pictus ist das meistbenützte Schulbuch der Frühen Neuzeit. Keine der zahlreichen Ausgaben und Bearbeitungen nennt den Mitverfasser Sigmund von Birken (1626-1681). Der aber führt den Orbis Pictus in mehreren Verzeichnissen eigener Werke auf. In Birkens Archiv erhaltene, bislang unausgewertete Dokumente bestätigen aber, daß Birkens Anteil an den zu seinen Lebzeiten erschienenen Ausgaben sehr groß war.
