Peer Tutoring

View through CrossRef
Peer tutoring is a well-established learning strategy that involvesstudents instructingtheir peers in a systematic way with the goal of enhancing the knowledge and skills of both the tutor and the tutee. A variety of models have been proposed for peer assisted learning. These include but are not limited to class wide peer tutoring, cross age peer tutoring and reciprocal peer tutoring (RPT). These models employ techniquesof grouping individuals together based on differences in expertise, age or specific strengths. In each group, the roles of tutor and tutee are defined. The effectiveness of peer tutoring has been reported by numerousstudies done across variousdisciplines with highly promising results. In order tooptimize the benefits of this strategy, attention must be paid tothe selection and training of tutors, appropriate pairing of individuals, clearly defined objectives and frequent evaluations. Overall, peer tutoring represents a valuable learning methodology when it is appropriately implemented.
