This chapter looks at Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Pierre-Alexandre DuPeyrou on March 7, 1765. Rousseau begins the letter by telling DuPeyrou not to get angry, saying that one must not judge him on the basis of his expressions but on that of his behavior. He feels the lack of the consolations of DuPeyrou's friendship. Rousseau then informs DuPeyrou that he must leave Môtiers because it is too close to Geneva, where he will never be left in peace. He says that “there is hardly any but a Catholic country that suits me, and it is from there, since your ministers so badly want war, that one can give them that pleasure until they are glutted with it.” Finally, Rousseau asks DuPeyrou to be the custodian of his personal effects until he is settled, before talking about his illness and the Council of Geneva.
