This chapter highlights Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Pierre-Alexandre DuPeyrou on January 8, 1767. In this letter, Rousseau addresses the misunderstanding between him and DuPeyrou, the first source of which arose from a defect in DuPeyrou's memory. In DuPeyrou's two penultimate letters, Rousseau claims that DuPeyrou supposed that he wrote to Rousseau that M. de Luze said that Rousseau had not at all slept in Calais in the same room as David Hume, a fact which is very true. However, DuPeyrou's letter did not at all mention Calais and distinctly pronounced that Rousseau had never slept in the same room as Hume. Rousseau then talks about DuPeyrou's letter accusing him of putting some malice into his letter of July 10.
