La théorie dumézilienne des trois fonctions appliquée à la seule séquence du graal chez Chrétien de Troyes (v. 3190-3253) n’est ni pertinente ni crédible. Des arguments philologiques, historiques, culturels, cognitifs et narratologiques peuvent lui être opposés et dénoncer son caractère artificieux. En réalité, l’épisode accidentel du graal apparaît comme un tiroir narratif dans un scénario d’ensemble relevant du conte-type 910B (Les bons préceptes) et correspondant à la partie Perceval de l’œuvre.
