This paper explores the themes of accumulation, saturation, excess, and abundance in some representative works of modern Japanese literature, focusing on the first three decades of the twentieth century. Among the texts analysed are the short storyHaguruma(Cogwheels, 1927) by Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, some poems by Hagiwara Sakutarō, the short storyKonjiki no shi(A Golden Death, 1914) by Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, and the novelPanoramatō kidan(Strange Tale of Panorama Island, 1926‑27) by Edogawa Ranpo.
