Applied photochemistry

This chapter explores some of the applications of photochemistry, ranging from photography to photomedicine. The making of a more or less permanent record of light and shade by photography represents the best-known of all applied photochemical processes. Photography is one of a series of photoimaging techniques in which photons are used for the capture and replication of image information. The chapter then looks at photochromism and photopolymerization. It also considers the solar energy storage; photochemistry in synthesis; lasers; and optical brighteners. Finally, the chapter studies photomedicine, discussing phototherapy, photochemotherapy, and how ultraviolet radiation is employed in the disinfection, sterilization, and purification of water.
