Barry Cornwall (Bryan Waller Procter) (1787-1874)

Abstract
Bryan Waller Procter, a London lawyer, used the pseudonym “Barry Corn wall,” an anagram of his name. Though Percy Bysshe Shelley called him “filthy and dull,” his lyrics and songs were extremely popular. His volume Dramatic Scenes, and Other Poems (1819) was well received by critics; English Songs (1832) was his most popular work. In 1832, Procter became Metropolitan Commissioner of Lunacy, a sinecure post he held until 1861.
