Abstract
Character criticism of Shakespeare, the analysis of his characters as individuals worthy of close scrutiny and strong feelings of identification, is both a manifestation of bardolatry and a mode of reading. Character criticism rose with the reputation of Shakespeare as an author in the Restoration and eighteenth century; reached its high point as a critical genre during the Romantic and Victorian periods, as Shake speare appreciation intensified into Shakespeare worship or bardolatry; and declined after the 1930s, when formalism and the New Criticism took hold in universities on both sides of the Atlantic.
