Infantile hemangioma and diffuse hepatic hemangiomatosis in neonates with the development of life-threatening events

View through CrossRef
Infantile hemangioma (IH) is a benign neoplasm characterized by pathological proliferation of capillary endothelial cells, commonly manifesting within the first three months of life. IH is most commonly localized to the skin and less frequently involves internal organs. The prognosis for this neoplasm is generally favorable, with spontaneous regression observed in some cases. However, certain IH lesions, depending on their morphology, anatomical location, and size, can result in life-threatening events, including impairment of vital functions, thereby necessitating a meticulous approach to both diagnosis and management. The diagnosis of IH can typically be established based on ultrasonography findings, with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) utilized in selected cases. In instances where the diagnosis remains uncertain, biopsy of the lesion is indicated to confirm IH, followed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. This report presents a clinical series of neonates in whom IH resulted in the development of life-threatening events. Nonetheless, administration of propranolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker, in the form of an oral solution, resulted in a favorable therapeutic response with successful resolution of complications. Title: Infantile hemangioma and diffuse hepatic hemangiomatosis in neonates with the development of life-threatening events
