Norman Lewis (1909–1979) was a Harlem-born painter who became one of the most important and distinctive voices within the first generation of Abstract Expressionism. Though deeply embedded in Abstract Expressionism and exhibiting alongside artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Lewis was long viewed through the lens of race rather than innovation: a divide he believed time would ultimately correct.
