Joined Fragments of a Ring-based Krater: Chariot Scene
View through Harvard Museums
Fragmentary ring-based krater, with the forepart of a pair of horses, the reins pulled back from the rear, in front of a stylized figure, walking with arms and hands outstetched. Between them is a vertical (slighlty diagonal) line of circle motifs. 3 broad bands are below them, the horses' legs extending into them. There is a another thick band above them, just below the rim and on the flat lip. Orange-brown slip with red paint. 6 joining, restored fragments, paint cracking, chipped, pitted.
Department of Ancient and Byzantine Art & Numismatics
Purchased in Christie's London auction of 29 October 2003 by Dr. Jerome Eisenberg of Royal-Athena Galleries in New York. Both fragments have old ink labels and numbers as well as stickers which indicate that they come from an old private collection. Purchased in memory of Emily T. Vermeule by Roy W. Lennox and Joan E. Weberman. Reportedly from Cyprus.
