Rim, Neck and Shoulder of Krater with Painted Pictorial Style Decoration

View through Harvard Museums
3 joined fragments of ring (neck) krater, including the neck, everted rim, and shoulder with Pictorial Style decoration. The collar of the vessel is painted solid red-orange brown. On the shoulder there is the front portion of a goat, with long curved horns and beard, traces of more animals in front (probably another goat). Between the animals are diagonal and horizontally placed whorl shells and a rosette. The interior of the neck is slipped solid as well. The rim has foliate band groups. Reddish fabric. The rim and neck are chipped, and some of the pain is cracking.
Department of Ancient and Byzantine Art & Numismatics Purchased in Christie's London auction of 29 October 2003 by Dr. Jerome Eisenberg of Royal-Athena Galleries in New York. Fragment has old ink labels and numbers as well as stickers which indicate that it comes from an old private collection. Reportedly from Cyprus. Harvard Art Museums/Arthur M. Sackler Museum Purchase through the generosity of Roy W. Lennox and Joan E. Weberman in memory of Emily T. Vermeule
