Managing Drosophila suzukii in Berries

View through CrossRef
Abstract The spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is an invasive fly that attacks a wide range of soft-skinned fruits, including berries. Worldwide, this pest has caused significant economic damage in major soft fruit producing regions. Currently, management relies mainly on the use of insecticides, traps for monitoring and surveillance, and cultural practices to reduce infestations. However, continued use of insecticides raises questions about sustainability. To improve the management of D. suzukii , more effective early detection methods are being developed, as well as new control strategies, such as the use of attractants and the introduction of biological control agents. This review presents current approaches to control this pest with examples from Oregon and California, the United States. It also suggests promising research avenues for more sustainable management in the future. Information © The Authors 2025
