The Civic Museum of Zoology in Rome: from its foundation to the end of Bronzini's directorship (1932-1978)

View through CrossRef
This article presents a summary of the history of the Civic Museum of Zoology from its foundation in 1932 until the retirement of Ermanno Bronzini (1978), its director since 1956. Pending more detailed historical and archival research, which would certainly be desirable, we focus mainly on outlining the cultural policy pursued by the Zoological Garden and the Civic Museum of Zoology during Bronzini's directorship. The Museum then became independent in 1998. The result, although to be considered preliminary, outlines the Museum's central role as a driving force and hub for naturalistic research in Rome. This aspect has been ignored until now and is of particular interest in light of the planned “science museum” in the capital and the renewed national interest in biodiversity research.
