Summer fashion for 1830

View through Europeana Collections
This sheet, so far attributed to Franz B. attributed to Dörbeck, showing a couple in back view and in the background a lady approaching them, would be extremely unusual for his oeuvre. Dörbeck, who came to Berlin in 1823 and quickly became famous for his humorous depictions of Berlin folk life, did not create fashionable caricatures from his own drawings. It has now been established for the first time that he copied a French model by Charles Philipon, which was published in Paris in November 1829 with the title \"Mode de l'année prochaine\". In Berlin, the depiction gave rise to prolonged controversy with the censorship authorities because it was allegedly contrary to good manners. The Royal Police Bureau forbade the Gropius brothers to publish this depiction because it was \"obscös\". The latter challenged this decision in a letter dated June 15, 1830, on the grounds that the sheet was faithfully copied from a French original, \"which is not forbidden to sell, so as not to send the money out of the country, which is not so insignificant as it might seem, since we know from experience that over 1000 copies of such things are easily sold.\" On July 20 - rather late for the sale of this subject, which was intended for the summer months - the Gropius brothers finally received permission to distribute the print, but on condition that \"the flesh-colored illuminated parts\" be darkened. On August 5, 1830, police inspector Mertke noted in his final report that he had found the fashion caricatures \"all in the darkened manner\" at the local art dealers and at the Gropius brothers' publishing house itself.
