This chapter presents Pershing's letters, diary entries, and official correspondence written in March 1918. In the third month of the year, Pershing was visited by Secretary of War Newton D. Baker. Pershing presented him with his plans for the AEF and the challenges that he was facing at the time and would surely come to face as the war progressed. This month also saw Maj. Gen. Peyton C. March replace Gen. Tasker H. Bliss as Chief of Staff. Maj. Gen. March would become a thorn in Pershing's side for the remainder of the war. The sources included in this chapter show the origin of their personal feud, which persisted well after the war.
