Vetrine invisibili. La centralità del commercio nella biografia dei luoghi

Il saggio riflette sul ruolo del commercio di quartiere dal punto di vista di un’antropologia urbana legata ai concetti di “abitare” e di “senso del luogo”. Facendo riferimento a due ricerche etnografiche svolte nei rioni del centro storico di Roma, sarà discusso il modo in cui le trasformazioni di un’area urbana vengono raccontate dai suoi abitanti. Tali narrazioni, basate sulla giustapposizione di elementi del presente e del passato, assomigliano a “biografie” dei luoghi, costruite alla scala delle vite individuali. Danno ragione all’osservazione di Michel De Certeau che «si abitano solo luoghi popolati da spettri» e di solito riservano un ruolo fondamentale agli esercizi commerciali. La loro analisi aiuta a mettere a fuoco: alcuni aspetti di fondo delle trasformazioni urbane contemporanee; il modo in cui assumono forme specifiche nei diversi contesti urbani; come anche aspetti apparentemente banali o strumentali possano rivelarsi emotivamente e persino moralmente significativi per chi abita quei luoghi. The present essay discusses the role of district commerce from the perspective of an urban anthropology linked to the notions of inhabiting and sense of place. Drawing on two ethnographic studies carried out in the districts of the centre of Rome, we will discuss the way the transformations of an urban area are narrated by its residents. Such narratives, based on the juxtaposition of elements from the present and the past, resemble ‘biographies’ of places, built around individual lives. They echo Michel De Certeau’s observation that “one only inhabits places populated by ghosts” and usually devote a key role to commercial establishments. Their analysis helps to bring into focus the following issues: some basic aspects of contemporary urban transformations; the way they take on specific forms in different urban contexts; and how even apparently trivial aspects can turn out to be emotionally and even ethically significant for those who inhabit those places.
