Tra Milano e Parigi: Medardo Rosso e la vita moderna

Il valore di Medardo Rosso (1858-1928) scultore è riconosciuto, ma la sua ricerca della “verità”, sia nel senso di natura che di modernità, è stata rivoluzionaria attraverso ogni linguaggio artistico usato. Il suo lavoro pionieristico con la fotografia è un’efficace chiave di accesso alla vita e all’opera di questo artista, un elemento che ne dichiara con immediatezza la modernità, lo sperimentalismo e l’audacia. Da un lato, la fotografia è organicamente connessa alla sua scultura (non fotografava nient’altro) e costituisce uno strumento privilegiato per comprenderla, ma d’altra parte è un’arte del tutto indipendente. Sculture e fotografie sono legate dal comune linguaggio della luce: unite dalla ricerca di Rosso sul potere della luce di dare forma ai materiali. Seguendo il percorso di Rosso tra Milano e Parigi, emergono i caratteri fondamentali della sua modernità, anche nel senso che la sua indagine conduce alla produzione di quelle che Baudelaire ha chiamato “immagini della vita moderna”. Il saggio verte in particolare sulle serie di fotografie dedicate a Impressione d’omnibus, Enfant malade, La Conversazione, Bookmaker. The importance of the Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso (1858-1928) is well recognized, but his search for truth, that is to say both nature and modernity, was revolutionary through every visual language he used. Still his pioneering work as an artist-photographer is little-known outside the academic community. His photography is deeply interconnected with his sculpture (he took pictures only of his own works) but at the same time it’s a fully independent art. Sculptures and photographs are linked together by the common language of light shaping both, that is to say by Rosso’s research about its power to shape different materials. Looking at his photographic production can be an effective way to comprehend Rosso’s life and art: it shows his modernity and experimentalism. Following his path from Milan to Paris, the essay focuses on some momentous photographic series, the images of Impressione d’omnibus, Enfant malade, La Conversazione, Bookmaker, to highlight the fundamental features of Rosso’s modernity, that it also to say he created what Baudelaire called “images of modern life”.
