Athol Fugard: Lessons From A Playwright
View through CrossRef
In previous issues of CTR, we have documented the work of Polish director Yurek Bogajewicz’s Oedipus at the Vancouver Playhouse (CTR 19) and the Robin Phillips-Peter Ustinov Lear at Stratford (CTR 25). The following documentation focusses on South African playwright-director Athol Fugard and the world premiere of his own new play, A Lesson From Aloes, which he directed at Montreal’s Centaur Theatre this past winter. The piece was put together especially for CTR by James O’Brien who worked as Fugard’s assistant on the production. O’Brien kept a running journal of the work and excerpted pieces from the journal for this unique report.
