Abstract BERNARn’s Apologia, IN PARTICULAR the section that has been designated “The Things of Greater Importance,” has often been cited as an example of a medieval ascetic condemning the apparently useless and pointless extravagance of gargoyles on cathedrals.1 In fact, a careful reading of the work shows that he never mentions gargoyles by name, and that he is probably referring to carvings on the capitals of columns (since he refers to them as being inside buildings), and possibly to those depicted in illuminated manuscripts and wooden carvings.
