Semiotics of Proper Names in the Poetry of Jassim Mohammed Jassim

View through CrossRef
The study seeks to uncover the semiotics of proper names in the poetry of Jassim Mohammed Jassim, viewing them as semantic and aesthetic components that play a pivotal role in shaping the poetic structure. Personal, spatial, and temporal proper names in the poet’s texts do not function merely as referential markers; rather, they transform into multi-faceted symbolic signs with cultural, historical, and civilizational dimensions. The research begins with the analytical semiotic approach, benefiting from the tools of rhetorical and cultural criticism to analyze the means and mechanisms of the functioning of proper names within the texts. The study is distributed over main axes that include: personal proper names drawn by the poet from historical and religious figures and myths; spatial proper names that embodied the binary of homeland and exile; and temporal proper names associated with major events and decisive dates.
