To-morrow?

Victoria Cross's "To-morrow?" is a tragic examination of loss and repressed desires, questioning whether the concept of 'to-morrow' is a genuine solace or a hollow hope. The story features the narrator visiting the grave of a beloved, characterized by a "last year of virgin purity of life that had broken her strength to bear," and buried, presumably, as the "Wife of V. Hilton". The narrator sees the spiked iron around the grave as "chains of repression" and grapples with the feeling that their shared "desires of the flesh" were crucified. The novel uses intense emotional language to explore themes of grief, condemnation, and skepticism toward the future, as the character questions whether they will ever refind the zest of life after a love so completely lost.
