Metamorfosis métrica de la épica sacra: De Juan de Padilla a Juan de Quirós

Juan de Padilla’s Retablo de la vida de Cristo (1505) is part of a corpus of epic texts composed in coplas de arte mayor between the 15th and 16th centuries under the influence of Juan de Mena. Juan de Quirós read the Retablo and used it as inspiration for his Cristopatía (1552). However, Quirós composed his work in octaves, in accordance with Italian models. In this way, he inaugurated the epic genre in Spanish Renaissance poetry.
