Cavalry and empires

Abstract Cavalry is the military branch which consists of armed cavaliers. The cavalry replaced the expensive and clumsy chariots. The role and place of cavalry changed in the history of ancient, medieval, and modern empires. It was a part of the dramatic rivalry between offensive and defensive armament in human history. A decline of the cavalry has actually coincided with the period of the collapse of empires and emancipation of colonies. It was related to the development of the quick‐firing gun and motorization of all armies in the 20th century.
