"Subject landscape. Winding roadway; wood to the left, with cattle and figures under trees; waterfall to the right, hills in the distance." [Register] A goat can be seen on a roadway in the foreground. The road bends round into a wood on the left. At the far left are a peasant with a large bull and some sheep. In the middle ground to the right, three female figures variously sit and stand on a grassy hill. Beyond them is a river and some buildings, including a cylindrical tower, surrounded by trees. A flat expanse of plain can be seen in the middle distance, on which are dotted more buildings. Huge mountains loom up in the distance on the left. There is a waterfall in the foreground on the far right of the composition. Virag 20/12/2004, Between 1984 and 1985, a research assistant, Dr. Brendan Cassidy, was employed by Nottingham Castle Museum to research and write a catalogue of the foreign oil paintings in their collection. The catalogue never materialised, but drafts and notes relating to Cassidy's research can be found in the Artist Files and in the Archive at the museum. All references to Cassidy relate to these documents. It is unclear when and by whom the attribution to Italian School, 17th century was given to NCM 1894-19. Judging from museum correspondance, the re-attribution occurred sometime between 1950 and 1984. In 1988, Laurie B. Harwood suggested that NCM 1894-19 could be alater variant of a lost original by Pynacker of around 1670. On the front: There are a number of small damages, especially in the sky, which have been inpainted and are now discoloured. There is a vertical damage running down the entire width of the painting. This is explained in a condition report by Mark Roberts, Conservation & Restoration of Paintings, near Worksop, dated 9 July 1997 (Artist File) as the damaged left seam of the original canvas. It was noted in the report that the canvas had been re-lined (paste lined). Although a condition report was made, no work was carried out. NCM 1894-19 was too large to be moved from the rack in store and so the reverse could not be examined. However, Cassidy's notes on the reverse made c.1984 are: "1. White label: 10882 2. On stretcher in chalk: July 17/86 3. Black stencil: 745 W 4. In ink: 2 & 56 (?)" Virag 20/12/2004, Collection of Mr Johnathon Walker
