The motif depicts the house in the garden of the city cellar in Kungälv, painted in 1941. The house with its characteristic porch remains today [2016] and is called Hotell Fars Hatt. In the past there was a large garden here that provided the hotel with vegetables and flowers. The building is also on the work of Gösta Sandels. Birger Simonsson and Gösta Sandels painted a lot in Kungälv during the First World War when you could not travel abroad. Signe Hvistendahl was a great admirer of Gösta Sandel’s art, visited him with his family in Kungälv and bought drawings and minor oil paintings from him early. Birger Simonsson also became friends with the family and painted several portraits, including One of the youngest son Brother Hvistendahl, now in Bohusläns museum collections, see UM031307. At the midst of the twenties, she received impulses from Tor Bjurström and now stands in parallel with his students as a representative of the free colour romantic tradition from Sandels.
