The Two Debates

Although we have no evidence that Christine and Alain knew each other, we find correspondences in their relationships (particularly Jean de Castel), subject matter, and some manuscripts that unite their works under a general theme of morality. Both the Debate of the Rose and the Quarrel of the Belle Dame focus on the importance of exemplum, whether the negative example of the foolish lover or that of the recalcitrant lady. Also central to both debates is the effect of literature on morality. Initiated with letters, the controversies are further developed through literary texts that exploit the issues, giving their authors motivation to challenge misogyny or to promote a positive reputation, and thus fame, for themselves. Perceived as the foundation to the Querelle des femmes, the debate of the Rose and the quarrel of the Belle Dame sans Mercy serve as proto-feminist literary expressions that evolve into the broader issues considered in woman question.
