AbstractAl‐Raqqa is a town of modern Syria situated on the left bank of the Euphrates River. It belongs to the western part of the Jazīra or northern Mesopotamia. Since the Hellenistic period, it was the site of a city called Kallinikos or, alternatively, Nikephorion, but it became much more important in the early Islamic period. In 639, the city was conquered by a Muslim army led by ‘Iyāḍ b. Ġanm after a short siege and the conclusion of a treaty.
