AbstractIn the ancient Mediterranean context, the Greek and Roman emphasis on monogamy is a peculiar case. Greco‐Roman views on monogamy made it into Christianity, which at the same time was strongly opposed to polygynous relationships. It is thus safe to assume that monogamy is one of the most prominent elements of the Greco‐Roman heritage in western civilization.
