This chapter provides an in-depth look at the career of 1929 Kentucky Oaks winner Rose of Sharon. A feminine counterpart to four-time Derby winner Black Gold, she won four "Oaks" races during her career for owner Johnson N. Camden Jr. and trainer Danny Stewart. She also defeated males several times and was considered second only to champion colt Blue Larkspur among the season's three-year.olds. She concluded her career with a win in the historic Potomac Handicap, but died of pneumonia in November 1929, leaving the question of just how good she could have been unanswered.
