View through CrossRef
Abstract Probation plays a vital role in the criminal justice system because it is the most common disposition imposed on offenders at the present time. Juveniles who are sentenced to probation typically are first‐time and less serious offenders. Probation also has increasingly been used as an alternative to custody for some persistent juvenile offenders. This entry includes an overview of the historical background and aims of probation for juvenile offenders. It also includes examples of how probation is administered and current trends in juvenile probation. Finally, it includes a discussion of why juvenile probation continues to be a court disposition.
