Châtelaine

View through Europeana Collections
Formed by four bodies. The first is a triangular plate that extends on the back with a tongue. The second is made up of six chains with links in the shape of a rocaille; from the ends hang hexagonal cases to contain the thimble (an element now lost) and another unidentified object. The third has three hooks: the lateral ones in the shape of a rocaille with a ring at the bottom, and the central one, formed by a screw and a handle in the shape of a teardrop. The inter-bodies are articulated by means of a horizontal nail. The last body is formed by a flattened hexagonal section case, inside which small instruments for sewing, writing, etc. are fitted: scissors, needle, awl, ivory tablet, snuff spoon and pencil. This case is decorated with floral motifs and a male and female figure dressed in a shepherd's style. \This type of châtelaine is called an équipage. Very similar models appear on the trade card of Marie Anne Viet & Thos. Mitchell, dated 1742.
