Les amours du poète et de l’actrice constituent un des clichés du romantisme. Alexandre Dumas a évoqué ce thème dans ses Nouveaux Mémoires (1866), à propos de Gérard de Nerval. Celui-ci avait fait état, dans Sylvie (1853), de la passion qu’il aurait nourrie pour une actrice qu’il nomme Aurélie et dont le modèle est sans doute Jenny Colon. De nombreux proches de Nerval ont contribué, avant et après Sylvie, à représenter Gérard en soupirant de Jenny Colon. Dans cette perspective, il est intéressant de relire les pages des Nouveaux Mémoires, qui donnent à Dumas, dans cette affaire, un rôle essentiel de confident, d’intermédiaire, voire d’amant en titre.
