Scroll 1 from 'Tale of Ōeyama' (Ōeyama emaki) the text accompanied by illustrations painted in ink, colours and gold on paper; made in Japan in the mid-17th century. One of a set of three handscrolls telling the popular tale of the brave warrior Raikō's defeat of the ogre Shuten Dōji. In Scroll 1, Lord Kunikata discovers that his daughter is missing, likely kidnapped by Shuten Dōji and summons the hero Raikō, dressed in rich red brocade, to defeat the monster. This set of scrolls was conserved with the support of the Sumitomo Foundation at Restorient Studio, Leiden, between 2012 and 2015.
